I’ve been thinking for a few days what I would write for my 2-week recap of Alexandria, Egypt. I have a lot of thoughts and opinions on it, but anybody who knows me knows I have thoughts and opinions on everything. What I will say is that I was bored in Durham and I wanted a little shake up in my life, a little adventure. I certainly have it now.

My resolve has been strengthened. I decided that if I am going to feel at home I’ve got to behave like I am home, so today I cleaned!!!!

Ahmed and I spent the first 3 days freezing our toes off at night and making plans that as soon as we could we would get to the store to buy heaters. Ahmed went to the large grocery store called Fataallah (it is like a Wal-Mart), but ended up not having enough Egyptian pounds to buy the heater and the new SIM cards for our phones. He ended up buying the SIM cards and we finally got in contact with our family and friends on, Friday, December 28, 2012. The brother whose apartment we are staying in called the house phone in the apartment that evening and told us that the air conditioning unit in the living room was also a heater! Finally, some heat in the apartment!

So Ahmed took me around the city today. I finally got my first glimpse of the Mediterranean sea and it was beautiful. Many little cafes were set up along the beach and if you wanted a seat you had to pay the guy who was running that area of beach. We just walked along the cornice and took in the view and the hustle and bustle along the way. On the way from our neighborhood we saw an entire heard of goat on the side walk and in the grass. The goat herder just had the goats walking along the street eating whatever grass and trash they found. He was walking with another guy talking and going on about his day. I just had to shake my head. There were goats of all sizes and colors, even though they all looked a little shabby. That was an amusing start to the day that unfortunately did not end up so amusing, but that’s a tale for another day.

Yunus 10:18

And they worship besides Allâh things that hurt them not, nor profit them, and they say: "These are our intercessors with Allâh." Say: "Do you inform Allâh of that which He knows not in the heavens and on the earth?" Glorified and Exalted be He above all that which they associate as partners with Him!
