I have been making a real effort to make better, healthier food choices.  On my last trip to the grocery store I stocked up on some yogurt for snacks instead of getting ice cream.  I had a coupon for Dannon and I had recently decided to not buy Breyers because it was full of sugar.  I don’t know why I did not check the label before buying 10 containers of Dannon  yogurt but I didn’t.   So, yesterday I’m enjoying a strawberry yogurt when I realized how much sweeter it is than my old favorite of Stony Brook Farms.  I turn the little plastic container around and what do my eyes see?   A travesty is what.

The first 5 ingredients in my supposedly healthy snack include 3 sugars, and not any good natural sugar but fructose.  The first 5 ingredients are  low fat milk, strawberries, sugar, fructose syrup, fructose, high fructose corn syrup .   I cannot tell you how upset I was.  I guess it is back to Stony Brook Farms no matter what the cost.  There is no easy or cheap way to avoid high fructose corn syrup and I’m certainly not going to eat yogurt that is full of the stuff.   Another thing is for sure, I would not give that junk to any child.   It is a wonder we have an obesity epidemic in this country when almost everything contains high fructose corn syrup in the top 5 ingredients.   Dannon has completely lost my business as has Breyer’s yogurt because it is the same thing.   If you are trying to eat healthy don’t just think because you’ve made a better choice in food group that it is necessarily better for you, always check the ingredients!

I don’t know if I am being adversely affected by all the healthcare talk I’m listening to or if my actual experiences with my healthcare providers is making me such a cynic.  What I do know is that I am one more bad feeling away from completely dumping the Duke Healthcare System and moving over to the UNC Chapel Hill system.  I’ve just dumped my primary care provider and I will be picking up a different provider at the end of the month.  I was close to dumping my gynecologist because I did not feel that her office staff was handling my appointments properly.

I found a wonderful website dedicated to health and wellness run by Muslims with backgrounds in biochemistry and pharmacology.  The web site incorporates medicine from the quran and sunnah with the health, medical, and fitness issues of today.   I enjoy checking out the website and encourage you to do the same.  Even if you are not a Muslim but interested in health and wellness I think you will find many good things of interest.

I read an interesting article today that said that keeping a food journal can increase your weight loss by up to 50%.  I found this very interesting because I kept a food journal for a few months and found that it did not help me to loose weight.  I have been thinking about starting back up with the food journal with the twist of writing down what I eat before I eat it.  The premise for this is, if you are about to overeat and you actually take the time to write down how many cookies you are about to put in your mouth you might think twice about it.

Do you have any experience with a food journal?  If so what effect would you say it has had on your weight loss?  Do you have any tips for making the journal work instead of having it just create more work?

I am trying to find the best method of cleaning out the pores on my face.  I have tried scrubs, masks and even the strips.  I have large pores and they unfortunately get clogged on a regular basis.  I am looking for a simple way to remove the dirt and whatnot from the pores in my face.  I would like some suggestions.  I will do nature remedies or purchase something from the store.  Thanks!

I dropped the ball on my blog, but I am looking to get back in the swing of things.  I have been working on  a few things like being more active and getting exercise, heating healthy, and trying to quit junk food.  I have started back with my Arabic class and trying to be more dilligent.  I am trying to work more steadily.  I can’t stay away from news about the current election cycle! and other general things around the house.  My brother’s wife had a baby last week and we are happy to announce the newest addition to the family is a healthy baby girl.  I have another niece or nephew on the way in May, as well.  Lots going on and I will try to find the time to talk about a few of these things in the coming weeks.

Yunus 10:18

And they worship besides Allâh things that hurt them not, nor profit them, and they say: "These are our intercessors with Allâh." Say: "Do you inform Allâh of that which He knows not in the heavens and on the earth?" Glorified and Exalted be He above all that which they associate as partners with Him!
