This is a newly published collection that I am looking forward to reading. I want to bring it to people’s attention because there are so few autobiographies from slaves or former slaves it is important to preserve the history that we have, share it with our children and remember where we come from.
*****************************************************************
Slave narratives, some of the most powerful records of our past, are extremely rare, with only fifty-five post–Civil War narratives surviving. A mere handful are first-person accounts by slaves who ran away and freed themselves. Now two newly uncovered narratives, and the biographies of the men who wrote them, join that exclusive group with the publication of A Slave No More, a major new addition to the canon of American history. Handed down through family and friends, these narratives tell gripping stories of escape: Through a combination of intelligence, daring, and sheer luck, the men reached the protection of the occupying Union troops. David W. Blight magnifies the drama and significance by prefacing the narratives with each man’s life history. Using a wealth of genealogical information, Blight has reconstructed their childhoods as sons of white slaveholders, their service as cooks and camp hands during the Civil War, and their climb to black working-class stability in the north, where they reunited their families. In the stories of Turnage and Washington, we find history at its most intimate, portals that offer a rich new answer to the question of how four million people moved from slavery to freedom. In A Slave No More, the untold stories of two ordinary men take their place at the heart of the American experience.

I am happy to report that my mother graduated from NCCU on December 16, 2007 with a Bachelors of Arts in English degree with high honors. Al hamdulillah. She had a very nice graduation and I hosted a party for her. Things went well and she is now teaching 3rd grade at a local elementary school. My mom was in college for a long time and I am proud that she stuck with it and finished. She graduated almost 10 years to the day that I did. We were both December graduates.
Congratulations Mom!

Do the users ever have to pay anything?
No. GoodSearchprovides people a way to support their favorite cause at no cost. The money comes from the GoodSearch advertisers.
How much money could this generate for Al Maun Fundl?
We estimate that each Web search will generate approximately $0.01 for the designated charity or school (image, video and news searches are not included). It quickly adds up! Here’s an example of how much your organization can earn:
| Charity or School Size | Number of Supporters | Average Searches Per Day | Estimated Revenue/Year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small | 100 | 2 | $730 |
| Medium | 1,000 | 2 | $7,300 |
| Large | 10,000 | 2 | $73,000 |
The sky is the limit. The more people use GoodSearch, the more money will be directed towards causes. There is no cap on how much money we will direct to charities.
Why is GoodSearch especially relevant to charities today?
GoodSearch can not only help fund organizations focused on recent major disasters including 9/11, the Indian Ocean tsunami and Hurricane Katrina, but it is invaluable to the hundreds of thousands of smaller causes that have a hard time raising funds to begin with and often see further shortages in contributions due to the overwhelming support for disaster relief.
GoodSearchis also a great way for people to stay connected with a cause. Every day through GoodSearch, users are able do something to help a specific cause and show their loyalty to an organization. In addition to this added cash, smaller charities and schools benefit from the increased awareness and visibility they can get by being listed with GoodSearch or featured as the site’s “Charity of the Day” on its home page.

The Prophet said, “Allah has forbidden you ( 1 ) to be undutiful to your mothers (2) to withhold (what you should give) or (3) demand (what you do not deserve), and (4) to bury your daughters alive. And Allah has disliked that (A) you talk too much about others ( B), ask too many questions (in religion), or (C) waste your property.” |

In Islam holidays are of a religious nature. When we Muslims celebrate something it has a significant meaning in our religion. My countrymen, however, will celebrate anything from Secretary’s day to the day they believed Isa (Jesus) was resurrected. From the date they celebrate the birth of Isa to president’s day. The number of holidays listed on a calendar sold in the United states runs I’m sure at least 2-3 per month.
Before I became a medical transcriptionist and had the good fortune to work out of my home I worked in a call center as a work force analyst. This job required me to share an office with 5 other people. The lady who sat at the desk next to mine was a divorced mother of 3 who was shacking up with her current boyfriend. So, as the December holiday season rolled around my co-workers were sharing information about their plans and one day the lady next to me was telling the story how her children were learning that Santa did not exist and how she wanted to keep them believing that a man from the North Pole had a sleigh and reindeer and was going to bring them presents. Mind you her children ranged in age from 7-13. After she lamented about this for a while she turned to me to ask how I would handle this situation. I tried to explain to her that as a Muslim I would not be celebrating Christmas and even before I had accepted Islam there was no way I was going to perpetuate a silly lie like that that to my children. It took everyone in the office by complete surprise when this woman broke out in tears and actually cried because she was so upset about the fact that my children would not know about santa clause. It was the most bizarre experience I have ever had at work. I actually laughed that day because I could not believe this lady could actually work up enough emotion to make tears over santa clause.
I guess it is true when people say it takes all kinds.
